Considering the number of books I read, one would think I would be a pro at writing reviews...but not so. This is my first Amazon review. I truly enjoyed every minute of this book. There were certain characters developed to the point that you almost felt that you looked through their eyes. The other characters were so humanized that they felt like someone you had once known. I sat in bed reading telling myself "I will go to sleep after this chapter" only to realize, that without my knowing, the sun was starting to rise. I love police thriller/crime novels and have read in excess of 500 of them and this rates in my top 20.
I'm pretty amazed at the number of overly positive reviews to this. I finished it just because I've been traveling and don't mind being bored but, man, this book is incredibly poorly written. Guess I got what I paid for (free).Meandering storyline(s), inconsistent theme, minor characters that fall off only to be brought back 100 pages later as something more than minor, a title that is never developed and a wrapped-in-a-bow ending that makes no sense. Further, this could have been done in easily half the # of words/pages.Comparing this to other significant and successful fictional crime writers is laughable. Needless to say, I won't be killing any more of my boredom on this author.
"Killing Hope" was a little slow at the beginning, but I stuck with it, and am very glad I did. It was a fantastic read, and I very highly recommend this book. The protaganist, L.A. Detective Gabe Quinn, is in pursuit of a serial killer who is dubbed The Undertaker because he folds his victims hands across their chests; he strews rose petals around their bodies; he dabs a cross of ashes on their foreheads, and seals their lips with crazy glue. One of the victims is a 10 year old girl, which haunts Gabe. Another victim is the niece of the FBI Director, and with this, the investigation is escalated, and Gabe is put in charge of it with a top FBI agent, Bill Teague.Gabe, a widower, is a veteran detective, with two adult children, who has his own demons, which he is dealing with, and which demons are revealed gradually throughout the narrative. Eventually the serial killer contacts Gabe on his cell phone, disguising his voice, and taunting him with his gruesome deeds. A newscaster, Stacey Kellerman, is also taunting Gabe with character assassinations of him in her newscasts, which she has been encouraged to do by the serial killer in return for an exclusive taped interview from the killer. There are so many incredible plot developments in this book that at times you are left stunned. The author up until the last part of this book introduces new conflicts that amazes the reader. And, yet, he resolves all these conflicts. What is most amazing, however, is the ending; in fact, it is downright shocking. It is mind-boggling shocking! Not for one minute did I anticipate this ending. I defy anyone who has read this book to say that he or she anticipated this ending. Moreover, this ending also completely and totally shocked Detective Gabe Quinn.
Wow, what an ending. I never, never guessed this one and what a twist. This book really moves with all the action. This is the first in the series for Gabe Quinn. You know at first something has happened in his life, he has been on a leave from the police force for 10 months. Really don't explain, so you are always trying to figure that out. He has been assigned a case for a cold blooded killer. The killer - named - The Undertaker? Why, because he leaves his victims like they are ready for burial. The has rose petals around them, and glues their mouth shut. The victim that Gabe is investigating is a nine year old girl. Before that a professor? What is the link. The killing escalate and when other bodies are found, Gabe works with the FBI, travels to Nevada, to hunt the killer down. While all of this is going on, he is always mindful of the serial killer who he is still after - The Maestro. The the two killers the same? The ending was definitely a shocker. Pick up this book if you like action and mystery. Can't wait to start the next one!
If you are like me, you will decide within the first chapter if you have found a book worth reading. Houghton did just that but managed to have a fan within the first sentence. Immediately I knew this was a book I would enjoy. Thankfully he did not let me down. Houghton has a gift with the written word that leaves you feeling as if you were there beside the characters experiencing their lives with them. I am not on a quest to not only read the remainder of the Houghton series but all books that this author may have written or will does so in the future.
This is one of the first Houghton books I've read and the first in this series. Adjectives just aren't enough to express how much I loved this book and Gabe Quinn. This is a complex plot about the search for a serial killer. Gabe Quinn is an LA homicide detective who has a lot of years on the job, who is recovering from a difficult case that he didn't solve, but resulted in the death of his wife. Gabe is emotionally strung tight, not at all in a good condition. The murders are bizarre, with a wide variety of victims (even a child). And the killer is trying to make Gabe front and center in the investigation -- but for sinister reasons. Needless to say, there is a lot of emotion in this story -- emotion that is well developed. The action is great and real life. And Gabe is a believable hero that can and does get stomped by bad guys. Good people are killed and the identity of the killer is a true shocker -- one I certainly didn't see coming. I literally can't wait for the next book in the series!
