Review

"DESERT GARDENS OF STEVE MARTINO, by Caren Yglesias, proves that no one uses palm trees — and other desert plants — more fluently. Part of Martino’s trick is setting plants that have few flowers but fabulous shapes against geometric slabs of deeply colored walls. The crimson hues in a Phoenix garden must be as much of a draw for the hummingbirds as the mirrored surface of the water trough. Blue concrete pyramids, magenta poles, yellow awnings and fiberglass panels — these are all elements in Martino’s playful, imaginative designs." —New York Times Book Review"A beautifully made book that will appeal to gardeners and designers interested in the Southwest." —Library Journal "Scorching summer days in the deserts of the Southwest are not usually when the desert becomes inspirational. Long an admirer of Mr. Martino’s work, I eagerly awaited the publication of his book. It did not disappoint. Beautifully photographed, it is a nice overview of many stellar projects he created in AZ and Southern CA. The text provides clarity to the design challenges and solutions. I highly recommend this book for the general reader as well as landscape architects.

I had heard of Steve through the Phx Desert Botanical Garden (I believe he was a Speaker?) as I recently moved to Phoenix. This man is a genius because he treads so lightly when creating gardens or remodeling homes for his Clients. He doesn’t create more debris, he eliminates it, which is so unusual. I read the book, cover to cover, in one sitting, and can’t wait to read it again. There’s much to learn, but it’s not a step by step. For ex., the way he situated an overhead screen to allow morning light but block afternoon sun. Sounds simple, but when you see how he did it, very creative. If you live in Phoenix, Palm Springs or Tucson, this book needs to be in your collection.

I found this book while looking for inspiration for my sloping front yard in Los Angeles. The photos are wonderful, and Mr Martino's observations are very helpful to understand why he makes the choices that he has made. Many of the plants are named in the captions, but most of them are reused throughout his projects, so it helps if you recognize them by sight. There are other books out there that are catalogs for desert plants, but only Steve Martino can show us how to use them as an artist. The use of richly colored plaster walls with the plant choices is absolutely fantastic!

This has to be the most beautiful book on landscape architecture I have ever owned. Thank you for being an inspiration & creative voice in the profession.

Beautiful photos. Would have liked more description and plant names.

Very clear design principles. Not hostile to the environment. Many hardscape examples can be applied to non-desert plans too. Martino is a standout! Only reason I don’t give five stars is due to slightly wonky binding on my copy.

Awesome

Beautiful book about one of the most innovative landscape designers of our time. The book brings Steve Martino’s Works to life

Contemporary Art: World CurrentsBy Terry Smith

Contemporary Art: World Currents is the first comprehensive worldwide survey of contemporary art from the 1980s to the present day.

Author Terry Smith argues that, in recent decades, a global shift from modern to contemporary art has occurred: artists everywhere have embraced the contemporary world’s teeming multiplicity, its proliferating differences and its challenging complexities and new technologies. Alongside more than 350 carefully selected color images of key works, Terry Smith offers the first account of these changes, from their historical beginnings to the present day. Exploring key works by both well known
and little-known artists, the author shows how contemporary art achieved definitive force in the markets and museums of the major art centres during the 1980s and then became a global phenomenon as artworlds everywhere began to connect more closely: new communicative technologies and expanding social media are now shaping the future of art.

Contemporary Art: World Currents breaks new ground in tracing how modern, traditional and indigenous art became contemporary in each cultural region of the world, ranging across Western, East and Central Europe, North and South America and the Caribbean, Oceania, Africa, and the Middle East. Terry Smith lays the groundwork for a new comparative approach to contemporary art, emphasizing its relationships to all aspects of contemporary life. He argues that it is cultural diversity and individual artistic inventiveness, not a convergence towards sameness, which makes today’s art contemporary.

Contemporary Art: World Currents brings the subject right up-todate, highlighting the concerns of contemporary artists while giving the reader an invaluable insight to art today.

Review

"Fulbrook's History of Germany is an excellent overview, clearly presented, and well written. Of particular strength is its coverage of East Germany, which is comprehensive and balanced. It effectively complements primary source readings, lectures, and more specialized articles. This fourth edition extends the coverage of events up through the present, and incisively covers the historiographical debates of recent years as well."—David G. Tompkins, Carleton College

“This new edition is an indispensable guide to Germany's tortured 20th century history. Mary Fulbrook combines a strong historical narrative with in-depth historiographical analysis, and never loses sight of the human dimension.”—Mark Allinson, University of Bristol

From the Back Cover

Introducing the key themes of 20th-century German history, this survey traces the course of social, cultural, and political tensions in Germany since 1918. Starting with the self-destructive Weimar Republic, author Mary Fulbrook guides readers through the extremes of genocide and military aggression in the Nazi era; the extraordinary political experiment of dividing the nation during the Cold War; the collapse of communist East Germany; and unification with capitalist democratic West Germany in 1990. A History of Germany, 1918-2014 also covers events since the end of the Cold War, examining the changing ways in which Germany remains divided even today. Treating West and East German history in equal depth, the author provides a useful framework for exploring continuities and changes in modern Germany.

In this fourth edition, the author has thoroughly updated the text with particular focus on developments since unification in 1990. She includes discussion of Germany’s pivotal role in the Euro crisis, the importance of the 2013 elections, and a review of Angela Merkel’s Chancellorship.  The book concludes with reflections on Germany’s tumultuous history over the century since the First World War.

Darkness Becomes Her, by Kelly Keaton

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-Fast-forward a generation. New Orleans, now called New 2, has been decimated by natural disaster. Nine prominent families have banded together to buy the city from the federal government; all that used to be New Orleans is now considered "beyond the rim," an area rumored to be riddled with supernatural beings and happenings. Enter Ari. Inexplicably abandoned by her mother soon after the city's fall, she is now a hardened 17-year-old living in Memphis. When she visits a sanitorium near the border where her mother spent her last days, her discoveries lead her deep into New 2. In search of information to help solve the puzzle of her origins, she soon realizes how intricately intertwined her fate is with that of the city and that it will be up to her to lift the curse that has plagued the women in her family for centuries. Darkness Becomes Her is part "Lightning Thief," part "Twilight," and part "Maximum Ride." Unfortunately, Keaton reveals the specifics of Ari's mother's delusion at the book's start, something if left uncovered until later would have packed a much greater punch. Yet, to write this title off as a predictable "been there, done that" experience doesn't do it justice either. For fans of any of the above-mentioned popular series, it's an excellent suggestion for a next read. Keaton paints richly detailed scenes of the New Orleans landscape and crafts fully realized, sympathetic characters. Ari's journey from loner to wary member of a band of misfits and her fall for one of them spins a compelling thread through her quest. Darkness Becomes Her will leave many readers clamoring for the next installment.-Jill Heritage Maza, Greenwich High School, CT (c) Copyright 2010. “Unforgettable, complex, and unique. I could not put this book down.”--#1 New York Times Bestselling author Christopher Pike"Darkness Becomes Her is part “Lightning Thief,” part “Twilight,” and part “Maximum Ride.” [It] will leave many readers clamoring for the next installment."--SLJ"A page-turning story with a multidimensional heroine and an atmospheric near-future setting."--Publisher's Weekly*"Keaton creates a New Orleans setting rife with Gothic rot and decay, and allows Ari to discover, articulate, and explore a range of political and ethical questions without ever striking a didactic note. Deft character descriptions humanize not only the creatures, but also help to individuate characters who suffer a variety of physical and emotional challenges. A great choice for a book discussion group willing to take on another round of vampires. The cliff-hanger end promises a sequel."--Booklist, starred review

"Hope stirred in the center of my chest, light and airy and ready to break into a Disney song complete with adorable bluebirds and singing squirrels." -Ari, Darkness Becomes Her by Kelly Keaton, pg. 6And with that, I was pulled right in. Hook, line and sinker. Keaton is an author after my own heart. She takes a bit of a new, more modern spin on a classic Greek tale and adds in a dash of other supernatural classics along the way. As well as a kick-butt heroine who is trying to find her past and where she comes from but discovers way more than she ever imagined. All while learning being different, doesn't have to be so lonely with her new found friends and allies by her side.Note: Some strong language and explicit/violent scenes throughout the story. Recommend for mature teens and up.

When I originally finished this book, I was really sad that the series was over, but a fourth book is coming and I am BEYOND excited.I love the cover of this book so much. I love the covers of all of them, but there's just something about this one. :)The Wicked Within is another book with a slightly slow build in the beginning, but once it gets going, it hits the ground running. It differs from the first two books in that it switches from Ari's POV to Sebastian's every once in a while. I had mixed feelings about that at first, but at the same time, it was really cool to see stuff from Sebastian's POV. The second book in the series set a lot of things in motion, so there's a lot here to enjoy. There was one thing at the end that really bugged me, but other than that, I was pretty happy. I also kind of felt like things were left pretty open-ended, without everything necessarily tied up - but that's solved now that I know a fourth book is coming! :D YAY.I would highly recommend this to anyone who thinks they won't be too turned off by the combination of paranormal stuff in the series. It took me by surprise, but I absolutely loved it, and I recommend that anyone else who thinks they wouldn't mind at least give it a shot.I'm really glad that I discovered this series thanks to PulseIt! :D

Darkness Becomes Her is definitely not for the faint of heart. Ari is gritty, foul-mouthed, tough and full of really bad memories of the past. But she's also one of the most honest and kick-ass characters you'll meet in young adult fiction today. Full of twists and turns, an interesting cast of characters and rich world building, Darkness Becomes Her is not to be missed.Ari is one of those unfiltered characters that is not for everyone. Within the first 6 pages I counted about 10 swear words and a good variety of them. She's rough around the edges but she's got good reasoning to be. She doesn't trust people because of her past but she knows how to take care of herself and she's incredibly mature. One of the best things about Ari for me was that I had confidence that she could get herself out of anything. It's nice to follow a capable heroine. She knew how to fight and well and she had the guts to do what must be done in order to stay alive. I loved this about her.I had no idea where this novel was going but it was such a pleasure getting there, that I really didn't care. Ms. Keaton built New 2 as a safe haven for freaks. After several hurricanes ravaged it, several families pulled their resources together and buy New Orleans. It's damaged still, dark and everything is rotting just a little bit minus the tourist part which has been completely re-done. With Spanish moss, old trees, creepy graveyard and shiny, glittered beads, Darkness Becomes Her combines the creepy with the gorgeous and mixes them for the perfect brew of setting. Adding a set of ragtag characters, each with their own abilities makes the place really come alive. Crank and Violet are both little girls-- Crank is a whiz with mechanics and drives a mail truck and Violet is a little goth girl with tiny fangs that hides behind Mardi Gras masks and collects shiny things. My only major compliant was Ari and Sebastian's relationship. I instantly loved them as a couple-- he was dark, a bit Gothic and brooding and she was capable and rough around the edges. I just didn't love how quickly they came together. They hadn't even known each other for a day and they were smooching. For people that are supposed to be guarded, they were certainly quick to let each other in. I liked them together but I wish I'd had a couple more moments to have them flirt before they just were. I also wish I'd had a bit more resolution with them at the ending. He did some Major Stuff and I need to know they are at least okay.Darkness Becomes Her had so much right going on with it and was such a quick read. From the moment I was in Ari's head, I was addicted, racing to a conclusion that didn't disappoint. In Ari's capable hands and with a rich world, Darkness Becomes Her is an amazing, if not incredibly gritty, debut novel. I'm surely going to be reading book 2.
