About the Author
Zhongying Chen is a professor of computational mathematics at Sun Yat-Sen University, China. He is the author or co-author of more than 70 professional publications, including the books Generalized Difference Methods for Differential Equations and Approximate Solutions of Operator Equations. He has served on the editorial board of four journals including Advances in Computational Mathematics, and two book series including the Series in Information and Computational Science, China.

Charles A. Micchelli is a distinguished research professor of mathematics at SUNY Albany and an international leader of approximation theory and wavelet analysis. His research interests cover approximation theory, wavelet analysis, computer aided geometric design, multiscale methods for Fredholm integral equations, speech recognition and mathematical learning theory. Prior to his current position, he was employed by IBM T. J. Watson Research Center as a senior research staff member for over 30 years. Honors he has received include the Senior Alexander von Humboldt Prize and an invitation to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians (1983). Micchelli is an editor of several leading journals in approximation theory and computational mathematics and also the founding editor of Advances in Computational Mathematics, for which he served as editor-in-chief from 1994 to 2011. He is the author or co-author of over 300 research publications and an owner of several patents. His research has been supported by the US National Science Foundation and the Office of Science of the US Air Force.

Yuesheng Xu is a professor emeritus of mathematics at Syracuse University, USA and Guohua Chair Professor at Sun Yat-Sen University, China. He is a National Scholar of China, the director of Guangdong Province Key Laboratory of Computational Science, and the president of the Guangdong Province Association of Computational Mathematics. Xu is also a member of the executive committee of the Association of Computational Mathematics of China and an Adjunct Professor of radiology at SUNY Upstate Medical University, USA. His research interests include approximation theory and wavelet analysis, the numerical solution of integral equations and PDEs, and image and signal processing. He currently serves on the editorial board of seven academic journals, including Advances in Computational Mathematics, where he was the managing editor from 1999 to 2011, and the Journal of Integral Equations and Applications. He has published over 150 research papers. His research has been supported by the US National Science Foundation, the Office of Science of the US Air Force, NASA and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Guangdong Province Government of China.

Great book. I have 2 apps in the play store with this book's help. HOWEVER as of writing it is a tad dated. There are new ways to setup the library. Some framework has changed. ESPECIALLY Since RoboVM has died (which allows you to port to iPhone - all the alternatives are workarounds I found them cumbersome). If you are pushing for Android/Desktop this book is great. I would recommend Cocos2Dx or SDL or Cordova if you want to do fully cross-platform development.

This "Cook book" is exactly what I was looking for. Many of the online tuts don't give as much detail as this book does and it certainly comes in handy. Unfortunately, like most Java implementations, there is a lot of code to write to do simple things but that's not the fault of the books author.

Covers many topics some of whicb I wish were covered more in depth but it is a cookbook and so contains many snippets of code with a good explanation. I wish the authors would write a more in depth text however. Also libgdx is constantly evolving which makes it difficult to cover nearly every topic but this text does so fairly well.

Great book. The content is well presented, and voluminous. It's a level above the "official" LibGDX book, which I also purchased.

great book for learning everything by yourself

This is the best book that I read for making mobile games. This is a diamond that you must have in your box of books.

First I should mention that it took me a while to decide whether I should start using AndEngine or Libgdx. After serious research my conclusions were that Libgdx is the better option. The reasons are that it’s still being updated and code testing is much faster. At this point the learning resources for Libgdx are basically two – the tutorials on their website and this book. Currently there is only one book more which is said to be outdated. As a beginner I decided to start learning from the book first because books tend to have some structure. And I must say that the book is indeed very well structured and there are a lot of useful details. At first I was expecting to have some problems with comprehending the material but the authors did a very good job in explaining with layman’s terms. If I have to be honest - you can actually feel the amount of work spent on this book. While going through this book, I learned how to work with Libgdx’s 2D API and create complex 2D effects such as particles, shaders, etc. Now I also know how to set up nice background music in my game and how to create a good looking text. There is a lot of material covered on the topic of optimisation which is crucial for smooth running on phones. I think that the tip of the iceberg is the chapter about third-party libraries and extras. It is very useful because it covers the most popular “goodies” used with Libgdx. This includes – multilingual support, skeleton animation, lighting and software architecture. This book is truly a “game development cookbook” because it explains everything needed to build a professionally looking game. For me, who has very little knowledge of the language and culture of Japan, this was a very delightful and fun book to read and listen to via the audio files. The personal stories were excellent and made the learning experience more real and enjoyable. If one was planning to travel to Japan I think this book would definitely be helpful to augment one's understanding of the language and culture; and if one was trying to learn the Japanese language seriously, this book would also make that learning process easier. Traditional textbook learning is useful , but so is the kind of learning that goes beyond textbooks, and this author's approach to learning a language is rooted in personal experience. Unique - simply and skillfully written and illustrated!!

I really enjoyed the spirit of this book, straightforward, and pointing back to the fact that learning should / can be fun! The chronicles shared by the author are so vividly described. As an interpreter and translator myself, and currently learning my third Language, I totally agree with the fact that understanding the culture and trying to capture a Language as children do yields best results. Arigato.

I lived in Japan for 16 years. I wish I had had this language guide at that time. The simple, clear layout makes it easy to learn the real, everyday language. Interspersed with the authors very interesting, funny stories about his experiences living as a foreigner in Japan - out of the big city. Highly recommend.

Japan is, literally, an insular culture, difficult to understand from the outside; and it does not seem to make much effort to be understood either. For example very few Japanese speak English and very few signs are in English. This is part of its attraction but can also make going or living in Japan a daunting prospect, as the movie "Lost in Translation" shows. This is why learning the basics of the language in conjunction with the culture can really go a long ways to transforming your stay in Japan to a really great experience. This is where Max Whittle's book really stands out: instead of impersonal grammar lessons, the book immerses you in the experience of a newly arrived foreigner, the very experience of the author which he recounts in personal and funny stories, but always whilst imparting the most important knowledge for one to get around and get things done in everyday life. Most significantly, he does not shy away from always showing what, in experiencing Japan, can seem strange or peculiar, and how an understanding of the essentials of the language and culture can reveal the meaning of these interactions and help us relate them back to our own cultural peculiarities and universal experience of our shared humanity. Since learning the Japanese language or about its culture are two inseparable sides of the same coin, I highly recommend this book for anyone going to or studying Japan: it is fun, broken down into short, easy to assimilate and practical parts, full of fascinating insights, and written in a clear and concise prose. You will not want to put it down until the very last page!

I go to Japan annually with my work and really struggled to get by without any language and just as importantly without knowing the culture. This book has all the basic language tools you need like asking where the toilet is and how to get to the train station. About half the book (one story in each chapter) is made up of the authors experiences living in Japan that are super fun to read and give you the inside take on the culture, which is very helpful because it is so different to ours. It hits the sweet spot between the study sections and the authors stories from Japan making it easy to read and learn from. If like me you have limited time and energy get the audiobook too so you can listen and learn in your car or on the plane.

Real Japanese transcends many of the cliched tropes that too often mar more conventional "how to" books. Clearly written and combining a number of the English author's often fascinating personal experiences in Japan with his stated intention to communicate the way people really speak there (as opposed to a more traditionally formal approach), "Real Japanese" is often as entertaining as it is informative. It should prove to be especially useful to tourists, as well as those who crave a unique and effective overview of the spoken language and the ways it reflects Japanese culture.
